Hi, I’m Chicava

I am a Universal Healing Tao and Institute of Integral Qigong and Tai Chi certified instructor. Through Sacred Chrysalis, I combine the ecstasy of burlesque, Taoist feminine teachings to create a space of renewal. My extensive spiritual and metaphysical studies include in depth course work at Agape International, Emotional Freedom Technique, yoga, astrology, tarot and multiple meditation techniques including being directly transmitted The Flower of Life meditation through Drunvalo’s lineage.

Since 2008, I have helped women rebirth the Goddess within and blossom to new levels of sexual, sensual, and creative power through dance, meditation, and self-exploration. I feel a deep calling to create a legacy of SHEROS—women rooted in their feminine sovereignty and empowered with full-bodied knowingness physically, spiritually, and mindfully.

I hold an MFA in Interdisciplinary Art from Goddard College, focusing on Black Burlesque herstory, sacred sexuality, spirituality and performance. I am one of the foremost scholars on Black Women in burlesque heritage. I have lectured and performed on the university circuit at Yale College, Swarthmore, Sarah Lawrence College, and Wesleyan to name a few. I have had the honor of performing within and contributing to powerful communities, including Mama Gena’s School of Womanly Arts, Sistersong, The Immortal Sisters of the Tao, and Agape International Spiritual Center.

Actor me: I play Oya in the upcoming show A Bunch of N*s Running Around with Swords. I appeared in Spike Lee’s She Hate Me. One of my favorite acting experiences was playing Hillary, the lead in Nicole Franklin’s Title 7. My training includes Shakespearean and classic studies with the amazing faculty of The Will Greer Theatrical Botanicum, in Topanga Canyon. In New York I've had the honor of training with Sande Shurin Studio, Seth Barrish, the Atlantic Theater Repertory, and Mary Boyer.

For thirteen years I was the Creative Producer of New York City's Brown Girls Burlesque creating political and theatrical burlesque from Black women’s perspective. I spent six or so of those years as an artist in residence at Joe's Pub at the Public Theater with my blues & jazz burlesque revue, The Dirty Honey Shake. Another terrific highlight in my burlesque career were my five annual political burlesque shows at The Brooklyn Museum.

Please check out DuYe Moves, my community arts organization on Governors Island. We offer free dance, Tai Chi, yoga and arts programs. DuYe Moves is my love letter to New York City, creating a safe third space for creative expression and community.
