For thirteen years I was the Creative Producer of New York City's Brown Girls Burlesque creating traditional, political and theatrical burlesque from Black women’s perspective. I spent six or so of those years as an artist in residence at Joe's Pub at the Public Theater with my blues & jazz burlesque revue,The Dirty Honey Shake. Another terrific highlight in my burlesque career were my five annual political burlesque shows at The Brooklyn Museum. I am one of the foremost scholars on Black Women in burlesque heritage and this gave me the opportunity to lectured and performed on the university circuit at Yale College, Swarthmore, Sarah Lawrence College, and Wesleyan to name a few.
I received my MFA in Interdisciplinary Art from Goddard College, one of the best decisions of my life. My areas of interest included performance art, women of color in burlesque heritage, sacred sexuality and spirituality.
Hey There
I'm Chicava Roslyn Tate, also known as Chicava HoneyChild. You may have seen Chicava in Spike Lee’s She Hate Me. One of my favorite acting experiences was playing Hillary, the lead in Nicole Franklin’s Title 7. My training includes Shakespearean and classic studies with the amazing faculty of The Will Greer Theatrical Botanicum, in Topanga Canyon. In New York I've had the honor of training with Sande Shurin Studio, Seth Barrish, the Atlantic Theater Repertory, and Mary Boyer.
I have recently returned to acting after a hiatus. And honestly with two fresh short films under my belt, another booked and working with some awesome theater artists I am never stopping again. I absolutely love the embodied storytelling of the practice.
I have done some wonderful projects as Producer and Director as well; among them is The Skin I’m In by Jennifer Armas through BRIC’s Intimate Eye and Becoming Betty Page which is both a play and a short film on the iconic pinup.
