About Chicava

Chicava’s acting credits include work with Spike Lee and Robert Altman. She stars in the indie feature Title VII. Her most influential training includes Sande Shurin Studio, Will Greer Theatricum Botanicum, and Mary T. Boyer Studio. She received her MFA in Interdisciplinary Art from Goddard College, her areas of interest being performance art, women of color in burlesque heritage, and sacred sexuality and spirituality.

For twelve years she served as the Creative Producer of New York City’s Brown Girls Burlesque creating political and theatrical burlesque from Black womens’ perspective. As an artist in residence at Joe’s Pub at the Public Theater she produced a live blues & jazz burlesque revue called The Dirty Honey Shake. Her annual shows for the Brooklyn Museum were crowd favorites. She presented work at Yale School of Art, The New Museum, The Kitchen and Sun City Casino in Macau, China.

Chicava is also a Universal Healing Tao Instructor under the GrandMaster Mantak Chia, and a Tai Chi, QiGong and Martial Arts practitioner.

She brings her arts and spiritual studies together through her school Sacred Chrysalis, the space where the sacred sexuality of Taoist Womanly Arts, burlesque, and sistering community meet.
